Why Women Rock Science?
Women remain underrepresented in STEM. While they make up 48% of the workforce, they hold just 35% of STEM jobs—only 26% in computer science and 16% in engineering. In higher education, the numbers are equally stark, with women earning less than 25% of degrees in key STEM fields. Latina, Black, and Indigenous women make up less than 10% of the STEM workforce.

This gap isn’t about ability—it’s about confidence, opportunity, and representation (National Girls Collaborative Project).

Why It Matters
Diverse perspectives drive innovation. Solving global challenges—from climate change to healthcare—requires all voices at the table. When girls see women thriving in STEM, they’re more likely to envision themselves there too.

Cranbrook Institute of Science’s Women Rock Science initiative aims to inspire all children to become problem solvers and to consider pursuing careers in STEAM, with a focus on encouraging young women.

Your Impact
Since 2018, proceeds from the event continue to support more STEAM programming, delivered by Cranbrook Institute of Science educators, to Pre-K through Grade 12 students in under-resourced communities across Michigan.
