Kicking Bear and the Battle of Little Big Horn – A Warrior’s Record
The Battle of Little Big Horn, at which General George Armstrong Custer famously met his demise, is a seminal event in the history of both the United States of America and the Native American tribal nations involved. Native warriors involved in the battle sometimes produced artistic records of their deeds, and the Cranbrook Institute of Science is fortunate to have one such work by Kicking Bear in our collection. Colonel Rodney G. Thomas, U.S. Army, retired, has spent years researching the battle as well as the artwork that was created by the Native participants. Join us on Saturday, November 11 when Colonel Thomas personally examines Kicking Bear’s masterpiece, which reveals hidden details of the battle and those involved.
Copies of Colonel Thomas’s book, Rubbing Out Long Hair (Pehin Hanska Kasota): The American Indian Story of the Little Big Horn in Art, will be available for purchase and signing.
