Would you enjoy sharing science and natural history with museum visitors? Then consider joining our volunteer team!

We have long- and short- term opportunities available for students, individuals, and family groups. As a CIS volunteer you’ll enjoy comprehensive training, and a welcoming and rewarding work environment. You’ll experience exciting museum exhibits, learn from curators and educators, and have the warm appreciation of the museum staff. Most importantly, you’ll be building connections with our visitors, creating “Oh Wow” moments, and helping them spark a passion for science!

Volunteer Opportunities

Science Stop Volunteers
The backbone of our volunteer team, Science Stop volunteers inspire curiosity through educational table activities. Interactive in nature, these activities encourage guests to touch, ponder, experiment, and explore, learning about many aspects of science along the way.

Science Stop volunteer shifts are available on weekends and select holidays.

Gallery Guides
Our newest exhibit is The Science of Archimedes, presented by the Leinweber Foundation and supported by the Michigan Arts & Culture Council.

Gallery Guides are based in the exhibit and provide the specialized information (training provided), demonstrations, and a personal connection that really brings the exhibit to life.

Gallery Guide shifts are available on weekends and during holidays and special events.

Special Events Volunteers
Being a volunteer does not need a lot of your time or committment. Consider becoming a Special Events Volunteer and help bring science to life during our holiday and special programs. This is a great way to explore new science topics, fulfill community service requirements, and enjoy the satisfaction of sharing and giving back. When you join the team, we’ll contact you with a monthly update to see if you’re available.

Main Floor Guides
Do you have specialized knowledge, or materials or activity, that you’d like to share? Main Floor Guides are stationed in the galleries and share their experiences with museum guests. Sounds interesting? Reach out for more details!
