Digging the Past
Using real fossils, bones, models, and casts, explore the world of dinosaurs and ancient life. Design an imaginary dinosaur based on what you’ve learned, then try your hand at being a paleontologist to consider ground layers, excavate a dig site and make fossil casts. Fulfills all badge requirements (1-4).

Finding Your Way
Investigate the unexpectedly fascinating topic of maps and navigation! Find your school on a globe, US, and local map, and then design your own map of your neighborhood. Next, learn how to navigate by compass – can you complete our Map and Compass Scavenger Hunt Challenge? Fulfills all badge requirements (1-5).

Forensics
How does forensics help solve crimes? Explore the many types of crime scene evidence and how it is collected, then join hands-on workshops in fingerprint analysis, chromatography, and imprint clues, before sharpening your substance analysis skills. Finally, apply what you’ve learned to solve a mini crime scene at Cranbrook Institute of Science. Fulfills all badge requirements (1-6).

Enjoy Forensics? Consider our Crime Scene Investigation Overnight! This experience takes Forensics to a grander scale while fulfilling all badge requirements (1-6), plus much more!

Super Science
Have a hair-raising experience with a Van de Graff generator to kick off an exploration of static electricity, then dive into experiments with color density and layering. Finally, try your hand at…flinking? Fulfills all badge requirements (1-4).

Earth Rocks!
A rock is a rock – or is there more? Collect and examine specimens and then conduct mineral identification tests to learn their intriguing stories. Tackle the Mineral Gallery Scavenger Hunt, then safely break open a geode and make a fast-forming crystal kit to grow at home. Fulfills all badge requirements (1-4).

Arrow of Light

Engineer
Explore the world of civil, electrical, and mechanical engineers! Examine blueprints and use architectural rulers, then choose a project from one of these fields. Use the engineering process to refine your project and bring it to life! Fulfills all badge requirements (1-5).

Scout Workshop Fee Details

Price includes museum admission.

  • Scouts/Children/Adults $20/person
  • Special Cranbrook Institute of Science patches are available for $5.
  • Cranbrook Institute of Science membership does not apply to Scout workshop fees.
  • Registration closes 10 calendar days before the workshop.
    • Programs with less than 10 total attendees may be canceled and refunds issued.

Guest Cancellations

  • There are no refunds for Scout workshops. Any cancellations made at least 10 days prior to the event date may request a one-time transfer credit to another event prior to May 10, 2025, pending availability.
