Saturday, November 2 | Activities will run from 11:00am - 2:00pm | Documentary showing will commence at 2:30pm

We are excited to announce the unveiling of our brand-new, long-term sea lamprey residents at our Science Stop, made possible by the incredible generosity of the Great Lakes Fishery Commission. Thanks to their support, which included providing an enclosure, tank fittings, and the sea lampreys themselves, guests can now enjoy opportunities to explore these fascinating creatures in their new home.

Are you ready to meet one of the Great Lakes’ most notorious invaders? Join us in celebrating the arrival of the Institute’s new invasive species: the sea lamprey, famously known as the vampire fish! Get an up-close look at these interesting bloodsuckers and help us welcome this addition to the museum.

Fascinatingly, sea lampreys have remained practically unchanged for 340 million years, surviving four major extinction events. With over 100 sharp, hooked teeth and an oval suction-cup mouth, sea lampreys are a fearsome invasive species of the Great Lakes - a single lamprey can kill up to 40 pounds of fish in its lifetime!

This event will be a rare opportunity for both children and adults to learn directly from the Great Lakes Fishery Commission on how to control this invasive species and to conserve our Great Lakes fish populations.

Experiences include:

  • Get up close with these two-foot long, five pound sea lampreys!
  • Enjoy mini presentations from the Great Lakes Fishery Commission
  • Design a device to remove garbage from the Great Lakes
  • Make your own lamprey papercraft to take home
  • Follow Fred the Fish as he travels down the stream in an interactive journey
  • Close out the day with a showing of the award-winning, feature-length documentary: The Fish Thief, in our auditorium

The Fish Thief documentary is recommended for adults and will begin showing promptly at 2:30pm. This viewing is a one-time opportunity to view The Fish Thief at the Institute!

Activities are FREE with the purchase of general museum admission.

And while you’re here, explore our newest traveling exhibit, The Science of Archimedes! Uncover how Archimedes' discoveries in mathematics, physics, and engineering have shaped our modern world, and gain a deeper understanding of the science behind natural phenomena.

Tickets to Archimedes are $8 for adults and $6 for children (ages 2-12) and seniors (65+) for non-members. Tickets for Family or Companion Members are $7 for adults and $5 for children and seniors. Back Stage, All Access, and Galactic Members and children under 2 are free. Non-members must also pay general museum admission.
