9th Annual Breaking Pediatric Cancer Sporting Clay Shoot
Friday, June 14th, 2024

Since 2013, the Institute’s pediatric cancer program, Cranbrook Cares, has been alleviating the isolation that many young cancer patients and their families feel during treatment through customized programming offered directly at hospitals, and during private events at the Institute.

Several times each year the Institute offers private opportunities to explore science in a sanitized environment when the Institute is closed to the public. Additionally, dynamic summer camp experiences allow campers the chance to enjoy summer and the natural world around them in a safe setting.

More About Cranbrook Cares

Over the past decade, Cranbrook Institute of Science has worked to increase access to its exhibits, collections, and programs for those who may have difficulty visiting the museum through traditional means. One such program that addresses accessibility is the Cranbrook Cares initiative, which brings young cancer patients and their families to the museum at a time when they need it most – during their treatment for cancer.

Through this unique program, young cancer patients and their families enjoy the Institute privately several times each year, away from the crowds, with transportation and lunch provided. Just this year, participants were able to enjoy a safe springtime experience at the Institute of Science, at no cost to the families of young cancer patients.

Through Cranbrook Cares, we meet the social and emotional needs of young patients and their families to reduce their feelings of isolation, encourage positive approaches to life events, and normalize – to the greatest extent possible – their environment. The Institute creates unique, private, and comprehensive experiences that educate and empower patients and family members during their serious illness. We offer children of all ages and their families a safe, controlled opportunity to explore the wonders of the natural world and learn about science from experts.

To better understand the importance of Cranbrook Cares, we encourage you to watch this “Kudoboard” sent to us from our partners at Kids Kicking Cancer, complete with pictures and quotes from last fall’s Halloween event participants:

Support of Cranbrook Cares will exclusively serve pediatric cancer patients, their families, and if necessary, their medical providers, close friends and support system. We also invite you to watch these very brief videos, which will give you more information about this important program:

No family will be turned away if they cannot afford transportation to the museum or a meal during their visit. If families are economically challenged and unable to participate, their round-trip transportation will be fully subsidized through the initiative. Additionally, with your support, the Institute of Science will provide healthy boxed lunches that are sensitive to the needs of young patients undergoing treatment for cancer.
