Before your upcoming visit to the Institute of Science, we recommend that you read the information below to learn more about what to expect, and what your experience will be like during your next trip with our new guidelines and procedures in place.

Cranbrook Institute of Science Reopening FAQ

Q. When will the Institute of Science reopen?
A. The Institute of Science will reopen Wednesday, August 19, 2020, and will be open to members only Wednesday, August 19 - Saturday, August 22, 2020. We will reopen to the public on Wednesday, August 26, 2020. All guests, including members, will be required to pre-register on the Institute’s website.

Q. Will guests be required to wear a mask?
A. Yes, all guests aged 3 and older visiting the Institute of Science will be required to wear a mask that covers their mouth and nose. Children aged 2 and younger will not be required to wear a mask, but they will be asked to enjoy the museum from a stroller or carrier. Masks can be removed from young children if they remain in a stroller or carrier.

Q. What are the Institute’s cleaning procedures and policies?
A. In addition to the Institute’s housekeeping procedures, additional staff will be walking around the museum at all times, while the museum is open to the public, disinfecting high touchpoint areas, e.g. railings, door handles, interactive elements of exhibits, elevator buttons, etc.

Q. Will hand sanitizer be available?
A. Yes. Hand sanitizer dispenser will be placed at key employee and visitor entrances, and high-contact areas.

Q. How often will the public restrooms be cleaned?
A. Housekeeping will be disinfecting the door and sink handles hourly.

Q. Who will have access to the museum when it reopens?
A. The Institute of Science will reopen to members only for the first week (August 19 - 22, 2020). We will begin welcoming all guests to the Institute of Science, Wednesday, August 26, 2020. The general public will enjoy free general admission August 26 - September 6, 2020, courtesy of MASCO Corporation Foundation.

Q. Can I purchase tickets online?
A. All members and guests will be required to pre-register online in advance of visiting the Institute of Science. If you are not currently a member, beginning September 9, 2020, you will need to pay general museum admission upon arrival.

Q. Will the Institute have updated hours?
A. Yes. The Institute of Science will be open Wednesday - Sunday with the following hours:

  • Wednesdays and Thursdays: 10:00am - 12:00pm; 12:30 - 2:30pm; and 3:00 - 5:00pm
  • Fridays: 10:00am - 12:00pm; 12:30 - 2:30pm; 3:00 - 5:00pm; and 6:00 - 9:00pm
  • Saturdays and Sundays: 12:00 - 2:30pm and 3:00 - 5:00pm

Q. What days of the week will the Institute of Science be open?
A. The Institute of Science will be closed Mondays and Tuesdays. We will share any updates related to hours on our website and social media channels.

Q. Can I just show up to visit the Institute of Science?
A. All guests, including members will be required to pre-register online in advance of their visit to the Institute of Science, and can register for specific time slots.

Q. Can I pre-register on-site?
A. If the Institute of Science is not at capacity, guests can pre-register on-site using their cell phone, or by calling the front desk, and will be required to provide their name, phone number, home address, and email address. If the Institute is at capacity we ask that you register for an upcoming time slot.

Q. Will guests be required to have their temperature taken upon arrival?
A. No. If guests feel sick or are ill, we ask that you do not visit the Institute of Science.

Q. Will the Reflections Cafe be open?
A. Reflections Cafe will be closed until further notice. We will update our website when more information becomes available.

Q. Will the Acheson Planetarium be open?
A. The planetarium will be closed during our initial reopening phase, but we are finalizing plans to reopen the planetarium later this summer. We will update our website when more information becomes available.

Q. Will exploreLAB be open?
A. exploreLAB will be closed until further notice. We will update our website when more information becomes available.

Q. Will the Cranbrook Observatory be open?
A. The observatory will be closed until further notice. We will update our website when more information becomes available.

Q. What experiences will be available during my visit to the Institute of Science?
A. Our educators and staff are in the process of creating memorable experiences for you and your family that will be available when the Institute reopens. Please check our website and social media channels for updates when more information is available.

Q. What will be required of me when I pre-register?
A. We ask that you provide us with the names of all adults in your party, how many people are in your party, and your email and phone number and house address when you register.

Q. What is the capacity level at any given time at the museum?
A. The capacity, at all times, will be limited to 50 guests.

Q. How will CIS help guests maintain six-feet of social distancing throughout the museum?
A. There will be signage located throughout the museum reminding people to maintain social distancing as they visit the Institute of Science. We encourage our guests to be respectful of the other people around them, and be mindful of respecting each other's space and maintaining six-feet of distance.

Q. When will the next Free First Friday be held at the Institute?
