Cranbrook Institute of Science Reopening FAQ

Q. Is the Institute of Science open?
A. The Institute of Science is currently open. All guests, including members, are required to pre-register on our website; guests will be able to pay for general museum admission during the pre-registration process. If space is available, we will allow walk-up registration and payment.

Q. What is required of me when I pre-register?
A. We ask that you provide us with the name of one adult in your party, their email, phone number, # of guests in your party, and preferred date of visit. Payment, if applicable, is required at registration.

Q. Are guests required to wear a mask?
A. Yes, all guests aged 3 and older visiting the Institute of Science are required to wear a face covering that covers the mouth and nose. Children aged 2 and younger are not required to wear a face covering but we ask that they remain in a stroller or carrier.

Q. What are the Institute’s cleaning procedures and policies?
A. In addition to the Institute’s housekeeping procedures, additional staff are walking around the museum during open hours, disinfecting high touchpoint areas, e.g. railings, door handles, interactive elements of exhibits, elevator buttons, etc.

Q. Will hand sanitizer be available?
A. Yes. Hand sanitizer dispensers are at key employee and visitor entrances, and high-contact areas.

Q. How often are the public restrooms cleaned?
A. Our Facilities staff disinfects touchpoints hourly, while the museum is open to the public.

Q What are the current hours?
A. The Institute of Science is open Wednesday - Sunday with the following hours:

  • Closed Monday and Tuesday
  • Wednesday and Thursday: 10:00am - 1:00pm; and 2:00 - 5:00pm
  • Friday: 10:00am - 1:00pm; 2:00 - 5:00pm; and 6:00 - 9:00pm 
  • Saturday: 10:00am – 1:00pm; and 2:00 – 5:00pm
  • Sundays: 12:00 - 4:00pm

Q. Are guests required to have their temperature taken upon arrival?
A. Currently, temperature scanning does not occur at the time of arrival. If guests feel sick or are ill, we ask that you visit when feeling better.

Q. When will the Reflections Café open?
A. Reflections Café is scheduled to open Wednesday, November 4, 2020. We will update our website when more information becomes available.

Q. When will the Acheson Planetarium open?
A. We will update our website when more information becomes available.

Q. When will exploreLAB open?
A. exploreLAB is closed until further notice. We will update our website when more information becomes available.

Q. When will Institute’s Observatory open?
A. The observatory will be closed until further notice. We will update our website when more information becomes available.

Q. What experiences will be available during my visit to the Institute of Science?
A. Our educators and staff have created memorable table-top, engaging experiences for you and your family to enjoy.

Q. What is the capacity level at any given time at the museum?
A. Capacity is limited to 100 guests.

Q. How does CIS help guests maintain six-feet of social distancing throughout the museum?
A. Signage is located throughout the museum reminding people to maintain social distancing as they visit the Institute of Science. We encourage our guests to be respectful of the other people around them, and to be mindful of respecting each other's space and maintaining six-feet of distance.

Q. When is the next Free First Friday at the Institute?
A. We’re planning on all-day, Friday, November 6 as the next Free First Friday. We will update our website when more information becomes available.
