Attention all science enthusiasts! Young scientists make meaningful discoveries during Explore Science! K-2 camp. Each week features unique, themed experiences on Cranbrook’s 319-acre campus and in the museum where campers undertake new activities, experiments, and adventures to become junior geologists, paleontologists, chemists, biologists, and physicists through hands-on projects. A private show in the Acheson Planetarium, an interactive auditorium program, and a visit with the Bat Zone are also part of each activity-filled week. Sessions will not repeat – come for one week or attend all five sessions!

Explore Science!  (Entering grades 3 – 5)

Mix, blend and explode as we figuring out what makes things work! Delve deeper into the disciplines of physics, chemistry, astronomy, and geology during Explore Science! 3-5. Working with the Institute’s expert scientists, campers will explore a variety of topics through hands-on scientific investigations. Each week offers a new scientific journey with a variety of unique hands-on activities which relate to different disciplines of science. Campers will visit the Acheson Planetarium, enjoy an interactive auditorium show, see a live animal program with the Bat Zone, and discover the wonders of Cranbrook’s 319-acre campus. Join us for one session or for the entire series as programs differ week to week.

Science fiction films are full of futuristic wonders and special effects that seem light years away from what is familiar today. However, the science involved is not as far-fetched as you may think it is. Much of what we see on the silver screen is based on real science. This camp engages students in the excitement of physics, chemistry, astronomy, and more through experiments and activities based on popular science fiction movies.

Explore Game Design! (Entering grades 7 – 9)

Learn how to design and program your own side-scrolling computer game using Gamemaker, an easy-to-use 2D game engine. Campers critically evaluate existing board and video games, create their own game design document, and learn basic programming, pixel art, and debugging skills to create their own game. Suitable for new campers or those who have previously attended game design camp. Each camper will finish a game prototype by the end of the session.

Founded in 1701, Detroit (“the D”) has over three hundred years of exciting history. Spend time with rare artifacts from the Institute’s collections and explore “the D” on field trips to locations both famous and mysterious. Discover the secret stories of Native Peoples, French Fur Traders, Civil War soldiers and Underground Railroad conductors.  Travel under the D to explore the ice age geology and bedrock of Detroit’s cultural center. Find out who the Nain Rouge was. (Or is it is?) Whose fist is that downtown? Learn the answers to these questions and more as you groove to the Motown Sound. Anthropology and geology meet history as campers explore the area on ancient footpaths, freeways, and perhaps even the Q-Line, bringing the Motor City’s rich past alive in the present. Explore in the D! will run from Monday through Thursday, August 7-10.

What happens after the museum closes? Grab the family and pack your sleeping bags for a night of fun in the museum during the Perseid Meteor Shower on Friday, August 11. Evening activities include a bat walk, star viewing in our Observatory,a program in the state-of-the-art Acheson Planetarium, a late night pizza, and meteor shower viewing weather permitting! The Explore after Dark overnight experience runs from 8pm August 11 and concludes with a continental breakfast by 8am August 12.


Before and After Care

Each week, campers in any session are welcome to join us for Before or After Care to accommodate families’ varied schedules. 

Both Before and After Care are staffed by First Aid-certified counselors. 

  • Before Care runs from 7:30 – 9:30am
    • Daily fee for up to 2 hours of Before Care is $20
    • Campers traditionally spend time playing games with campers and counselors before the day begins. 
  • After Care will run from 3:30 – 6:00pm
    • Daily fee for up to 2.5 hours of After Care is $20
  • Campers staying for After Care will spend time exploring museum exhibits, engaging in science activities, and interacting with counselors to foster interest in science. 

A fee of $20 will be charged per child for every 15 minutes the child is left in the care of Institute staff beyond their scheduled departure time. Payment is required prior to the next day’s morning drop off. 


Refunds and Cancellations: Refunds less a $100 processing fee will be made if your cancellation is received at least three weeks (21 days) prior to the beginning of the scheduled session. Refunds of Before and After Care fees will only be made if the cancellation is given prior to the start date of your child’s camp.
