Boy Scout Merit Badge Workshops: $30 per Scout

  • Cadette, Senior, and Ambassador Scouts may register for Boy Scout merit badge workshops.
  • Upon registration for a merit badge workshop, a complete list of prerequisites are emailed to the registrant.
  • It is the responsibility of the registrant to give the prerequisite information to all of the Scouts from their group attending the workshop.
  • Scouts should arrive for programming with an approved merit badge application (blue card) and prerequisite materials completed prior to the workshop.
  • A certified merit badge counselor will collect the merit badge application and all completed prerequisites for review.
  • Scouts will be notified of the status of their application within 30 days of the date of the workshop.
  • Cranbrook Institute of Science merit badge counselors reserve the right to give only partial credit or no credit if all requirements are not completed.
  • {F} Indicates Scouts should be First Class rank or higher for these workshops.
  • Scouts under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult..

Archaeology {F} ($30)
Dec. 14 || 9am-Noon
Experience first-hand what goes into, and comes out of, an archaeological dig. Interpret artifacts found at a local historic site and explore some of Cranbrook’s incredible collections.

Astronomy {F} ($30)
March 13 || 6-11pm
5 hour workshop – includes a planetarium program, please bring a snack.
The universe awaits you in this adventurous badge workshop. Learn about telescopes, moon phases, constellations, and our solar system. Our experts will keep the discovery going as they guide you through tours of stars including our Sun. Visit the Institute’s Observatory to catch a glimpse of a celestial object or two. End your evening in our Acheson Planetarium to explore the night sky as your mind begins to connect what was discovered during the workshop.

Chemistry ($30)
Dec. 14 || 1-4pm
Chemistry is not limited to beakers and laboratories - it’s all around us. Everything you hear, see, smell, taste and touch involves chemistry and chemicals (matter). Discover the basic properties of matter and learn to predict and explain how molecules will interact to form new substances.

Environmental Science {F} ($30)
Oct. 12 || 9:30am-4:30pm; April 25 || 12:30-5:00pm
6 hour workshop – includes break for lunch.  Please bring a sack lunch or purchase lunch from the Reflections Café.
Develop an appreciation for the environment during this workshop that takes place on the grounds of Cranbrook’s campus. Study ecosystems, air pollution, water pollution, and land pollution as we perform experiments related to these topics.

Fish and Wildlife Management ($30)
April 11 || 9:30am-12:30pm
Discover the meaning and purpose of fish and wildlife management. Take an up-close look at the food chain when we dissect fish species and examine stomach contents. Understand how Michigan’s resources are managed and how and why certain species are protected.

Indian Lore ($30)
Apr. 25 || 9am-Noon
Discover the rich culture of Native Americans by utilizing traditional tools and skill-building crafts combined with an overview of today’s American Indian culture.

Soil and Water Conservation ($30)
March 21 || 2:30-5:3opm
Discover what a watershed is as you navigate the Rouge River watershed. Learn about the impact humans have on a watershed and gain an appreciation of the importance of soil and water conservation.

Sustainability ($30)
March 21 || 9:30am-1:30pm; April 11 || 1:30-5:30pm
Discover conservation and stewardship plans to preserve natural resources. Identify different energy sources and how to reduce the “carbon footprint.”

Weather ($30)
Feb. 29 || 1:30-4:30 pm
Study weather safety, causes of weather, and forecasting tools. Meet with a meteorologist to discuss dangerous weather-related conditions and weather safety.

Cancellation Policy
No refunds given. Workshop credit will be issued for cancellations made 21 days or more prior to the start of the workshop, without a fee. Cancellations made between 21 days and one hour prior to start of the workshop will be charged a $5 rescheduling fee per scout. No rescheduling for no-shows or cancellations within one hour prior to the start of the workshop. Please contact our Reservations Office at 248 645.3210 for changes to your registration. All credits must be used within the current scouting season (April 2020).
