Every Rock Has A Story - Amethyst
This magnificent mass of amethyst quartz crystals formed from hydrothermal solution in a gas cavity in volcanic rocks, near Minas Gerais in Brazil. This type of crystal filled cavity is called a geode. As a side note, the ancient Romans mistakenly believed that amethyst gave one protection against drunkenness.

Courtesy of the MASCO Corporation Foundation, admission to the Institute of Science is free after 5pm the first Friday of each month through June 2013.
