Summer Camp 2015

Registration is open for kids ages 4-14. Camp at the Institute offers adventures from traditional nature study to the secrets of the movie magic to how to survive in the wilderness. And, it’s all based on REAL science!

Before and After Care

Each week, campers in any session are welcome to join us for Before or After Care to accommodate families’ varied schedules.

Both Before and After Care are staffed by First Aid-certified counselors.

  • Before Care runs from 7:30am-9:30am
  • Daily fee for up to two hours of Before Care is $20
  • Campers traditionally spend time playing games with campers and staff before the day begins.
  • After Care will run from 3:00pm-6:00pm
  • Daily fee for up to three hours of After Care is $20
  • Campers staying for After Care will spend time exploring the exhibit floor with staff.
  • Counselors will share simple and engaging activities with campers to foster their interest in science.
  • Please note, After Care pick up is located at the Main Entrance of the Museum which is different than the drop off location.

A fee of $20 will be charged per child for every 15 minutes the child is left in the care of Institute staff beyond their scheduled departure time. Payment is required prior to the next day’s morning drop off.

Refunds and Cancellations: Refunds less a $100 processing fee will be made if your cancellation is received at least three weeks (21 days) prior to the beginning of the scheduled session. Refunds of Before and After Care fees will only be made if the cancellation is given prior to the start date of your child’s camp.

Specialty Summer Camps

Cranem Survival Camp
(Entering grades 6-7)
July 27-31 
$395 members/$455 non-members per week

For our adventurous camper, the “Cranem Survival Camp” develops the skills used to keep you alive in the wilderness. If you were stranded in the wild, how would you ensure survival? What steps must be taken to outwit and outlast the dangers? Here, you will learn survival skills that range from fire starting to shelter construction and nourishment. Will the odds be in your favor?

Explore Science! K-1 
(Entering grades K-1)
June 22-26,  July 13-17, July 6-10,  July 20-24

Curious campers wanted! Each Explore Science! camp provides our smallest scientists the opportunity to make big discoveries through an exciting variety of age-appropriate activities and experiments. Join us each week for unique scientific experiences as campers tackle new science topics each day. Campers will stir up chemistry concoctions, examine samples from the Institute’s paleontology collection, launch rockets, do work with simple machines, and take guided walks to explore the campus’ rivers, ponds, and woods. Each one-week session also includes a visit from the Bat Zone and a show in the Acheson Planetarium.

(Entering grades 1-2)

Is your camper ready to continue investigating? Each unique week of Explore Science! 1-2 provides an exciting variety of age-appropriate hands-on activities, crafts, and experiments. Weekly sessions will highlight subject areas represented in the museum from Anthropology to Zoology. Campers will learn by doing as they dig up dinosaurs, defy gravity by building structures, and spend time hunting for toads and insects on campus. A private show in the Acheson Planetarium and visit from the Bat Zone are also part of each fun-filled week. Join us as we explore science!

Explore Science! 3-4
(Entering grades 3-4)
July 6–10, July 13–17, July 20–24
$295 members/$340 non-members per week

Physics, chemistry, astronomy – are three of the many science topics campers will explore this summer. We will investigate the mysteries of the universe and experiment with topics ranging from light and color to sound. Throughout the week, we will visit the Acheson Planetarium, tour the Bat Zone to see a live animal program, and discover the wonders of Cranbrook’s campus. Programs vary week to week.

Explore Outdoor 
(Entering grades 4-5)
August 3 – 7
$295 members/$340 non-members per week

Explore the woods of Cranbrook’s campus while identifying animal tracks, plants, and ways of navigating the wilderness. Activities will include archery, bird watching, and life drawing. Throughout the week, we will develop the skills needed for survival in the wild.
