$395 members/$455 non-members per week

Witches and wizards, join the professors from the Cranbrook Institute of Nature and Methodology for an exploration into the realm of fantasy—or what appears as fantasy at first glance. Come explore the cultural and scientific origins for magic, creatures, and illusions. Students are invited to be enthusiastic and inquisitive in classes ranging from Potions and Herbology to Defense Against the Dark Arts, and Care of Magical Creatures. After a rigorous day, students will play a game of everyone’s favorite sport—Quidditch!

Obtainers of Rare Antiquities
(Entering grades 6-8)
Aug. 11-15
9:30am - 4pm

As we heard in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, “If you want to be a good archaeologist, you’ve got to get out of the library!” “Obtainers of Rare Antiquities” offers the opportunity to do just that. Come study archaeology and experience a dig excavation, then learn how to process and display artifacts by helping to produce a real museum exhibit. History, anthropology, and cultural research will be highlighted, in addition to adventures in the field.

Cranem Survival Camp
(Entering grades 7-8)
July 21-25
9:30am - 4pm
$395 members/$455 non-members per week

For our adventurous camper, the “Cranem Survival Camp” develops the skills used to keep you alive in the wilderness. If you were stranded in the wild, how would you ensure survival? What steps must be taken to outwit and outlast the dangers? Here, you will learn survival skills that range from fire starting to shelter construction and nourishment. Will the odds be in your favor?

Unmasking Superheroes
(Entering grades 7-9)
July 7-11
9:30am - 4pm
$395 members/$455 non-members per week

Gamma radiation, a bite from a mutant spider, an alien from another planet, or a strong-willed human being—superheroes and their mythology come from countless sources to serve many needs. In “Unmasking Superheroes,” we will reexamine our favorite heroes through the lens of science. We will explore technology, astronomy, biology, and the laws of physics to better understand how our heroes do or do not function. Campers can become their own heroes as we explore the narrative and mythological aspects of superheroes.

Behind the Scenes
(Entering grades 8-10)
Aug. 4-8
9:30am - 4pm
$395 members/$455 non-members per week

For our film lovers, “Behind the Scenes” offers a glimpse into the world of character and creature design. Focusing on anatomy and physiology, we will design our own creatures from illustration to three-dimensional model. After discussing creature design, we turn to fabrication and make our own special effects. Moderate crafting skills are suggested, as some of the activities may be complicated. We will cover everything from puppetry and animatronics, to sculpture and painting techniques. Join us to learn the magic that happens behind the scenes!
