The Scientists at Cranbrook have put their heads together to create an exciting adventure for your Scouts! You will get all this, plus time to explore the museum and a private planetarium program. Please note: we are constantly developing different ideas for this overnight experience; the content may change year to year or even date to date. To stay updated, please check our web site for more information. This program is open to all levels of Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. No specific badge earned.

Friday Overnight Workshops – Webelos Engineer ($40) 6 pm Fri.-8 am Sat.
Jan. 16-17
Enter the world of engineering in this hands-on workshop. Start your workshop with a fascinating opportunity to learn about the field of engineering. We’ll do this by opening the floor to guest engineers who will talk about a current project or two. Investigate the role structure plays in an object’s ability to function, as you explore bridge building. Learn how electricity is generated as you explore electrical circuitry. Design a complex machine to do work as you explore the mechanics behind simple machines. In addition to all of this the Scouts will have the opportunity to take part in an interactive presentation on Forces and Motion in our auditorium and a Scout specific planetarium presentation. This workshop is a great introduction for your Scouts to the wonders of physical world.

Friday Overnight Workshops – Webelos Scientist ($40) 6 pm Fri.-8 am Sat.
Oct. 24-25
Investigations abound in this workshop dealing with the scientific method. Become knowledgeable of the laws of pressure and some of the theories of Bernoulli and Pascal through scientific exploration. Let your Scouts keep the scientific exploration flowing as they test Newton’s Laws of Motion. Discover the wonders of the properties behind the forces of gravity and how an object with mass has a center. Find out how crystals are formed and take home a crystal-growing solution. In addition the Scouts will get a chance to check out an electrifying physics program in our auditorium and their very own planetarium presentation.

Friday Overnight Workshops – Junior Girl Scout Astronomy ($40) 6 pm Fri.-8 am Sat.
Dec. 12-13; Apr. 24-25
The Universe is the limit in this astronomy workshop. Check out the sky above in our planetarium to create a chart to help you identify the stars and learn about the features of the Earth’s moon. Then, learn about the tools used by amateur and professional astronomers. We’ll take a look at the stars while using a planisphere. Scouts will get a chance to see how extensive our solar system really is by walking through our scale model. Finish with a visit the Institute’s Observatory to catch a glimpse of a celestial object or two.

Friday Overnight Workshops – Cadette & Junior Girl Scouts CSI ($40) 6 pm Fri.-8 am Sat.
Nov. 7-8; Jan. 23-24; Feb. 20-21; Mar. 20-21
Become an agent-in-training to solve a fictitious crime in the museum! Scouts learn the importance of a good memory while conducting an investigation, interviewing suspects and analyzing crime scene samples including blood splatter, microscopic examination of fibers and hair, and even fingerprints. Scouts will interpret data collected during the evening to solve the crime and determine…whodunit!
