Masters of Science Education

Developed by Lawrence Technological University, the Detroit Zoological Institute, Cranbrook Institute of Science, and Aquinas College.All courses are aligned with the Michigan Curriculum Frameworks and Benchmarks for Science and the DI standards.

A Master of Science Education degree from Lawrence Tech provides:
• A comprehensive understanding of science and its links with mathematics for those with or without previous specialized science training
• Enhancement of classroom teaching and assessment strategies
• Access to community resources (e.g., Zoological Institute and Cranbrook Institute of Science) for science teaching
• The opportunity to complete two courses each term by attending class one night per week on campus and one night per week online in the comfort of your home
• Assistance with elementary and secondary certifications through Aquinas College and University of Detroit Mercy

Earning Your Degree

Master of Science Education degree-seeking candidates:
• Must successfully complete 10 three-credit-hour courses, including seven core courses (36 credits for DI)
• Must begin by taking the Introductory Seminar course
• Must complete the Capstone Project (master thesis)
• May transfer up to nine graduate semester hours (director approval; also for DI you might be able to transfer up to 12 graduate credit hours)

Scholarships for Practicing Teachers
Non-Need Based

All U.S. educators admitted to the program receive scholarships of $ 210.00 per credit hour for all program credits. These scholarships are not based on need.

Need-Based Financial Aid

Additional financial aid, based on need, is also available to graduate students. Michigan tuition grants provide a maximum grant of $2,750 each year. Need-based loans are also available through the Stafford Loan program for up to $18,500 maximum annually.For additional need-based scholarship or other funding and a financial aid application, contact Lawrence Tech’s Office of Financial Aid at 248.204.2120.

Getting Started

Admission to the Master of Science Education program as a regular student requires:
• Bachelor’s degree with a GPA of 3.0 (acceptable undergraduate work includes unrelated fields but at least college level science course;  also for lower GPA contact director)
• Interview with program director
• Official transcripts of all completed college work, sent directly from the college Registrar Office
• Resume that includes three references, teaching experience, and extracurricular activities
• Copy of teaching certificate if certification is sought

Cranbrook Institute of Science teaches Astronomy Course

PHY6323 ASTRONOMY

Prerequisite: 0.

Earth's view of the sky. Emphasis on how astronomers understand cosmic phenomena through the analysis of light, the application of the known laws of physics and the use of logic and experiment. Students construct solar system models to enhance their understanding and make sky observations with the naked eye and telescopes. Current theories of the beginning and development of the universe.
