Welcome!
Parents and teachers agree that a field trip to the Institute enhances a child's understanding of concepts taught in school and sparks the fire of interest in further exploration. Each of our programs is written and designed to correlate with the Michigan Essential Goals and Objectives for Science Education and Michigan Curriculum Frameworks (MCF). We are currently reviewing the new state Grade Level Content Expectations which will be available in our next Teacher Guide. In the interim please refer to this link. Pre-registration is required for all group programs.
Important Notes
- Programs typically run 30 minutes or 45 minutes in length.
- The minimum size for a group is 15 people.
- We suggest booking your museum visit as far in advance as possible.
- Guarantee your reservation with a non-refundable deposit.
- Reservations without a deposit will be held for only two weeks.
- No discounts on group field trips for Cranbrook or ASTC members.
Pre-visit Information
Free Museum Visit
Prior to your group's museum visit, teachers and group leaders are welcome to visit the Institute free of charge during regular public hours (weekdays or weekends). Please identify yourself at our admissions desk and then browse our exhibits, locate key areas such as the gift shop, coat racks and restrooms, and generally familiarize yourself with the kinds of experiences your group will have during their field trip.
Your Time at the Museum
Be certain to indicate your group's earliest possible arrival time and latest possible departure time. This will permit us to adapt your schedule as necessary to best accommodate your group.
Chaperones
We require one adult chaperone (admitted free) for every five students, or 1 adult (admitted free) for every three preschoolers or kindergartners. Teachers are admitted FREE. Museum admission for each additional adult is $5. Programs are an additional $4 each.
Teacher and chaperone involvement in the visit greatly improves the students' experience. Please brief your chaperones in advance so they will feel comfortable and know what is expected of them and the students in their charge. Chaperones must supervise and stay with their group for the entire visit.
During Your Visit
Lunch Procedures
Due to space limitations, lunchrooms are available on a pre-scheduled first-come, first-served basis. Lunchrooms are not available during the summer. Outdoor picnic tables are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Each child should bring a disposable bag lunch that is identified with the student's name. Our storage space is limited, so we are unable to store backpacks, lunch boxes, CD players, etc. Students are encouraged to leave their belongings at school or on the bus.
Food and beverages, including gum, are not permitted in the museum halls.
Special Needs
Visitors with special needs are always welcome. Let us know how we can best accommodate you. The museum and Bat Zone are wheelchair accessible, and a limited number of wheelchairs are available at the Visitors Services/Information Desk.
Photography
Occasionally, Institute staff take photographs of students in the museum for use in advertising and promotional materials. Should there be any objections to staff taking photos of your students, please notify the front desk upon your arrival.
